Participating Artists

The beginning of the fall exhibition season opens Saturday, September 28, 2013, 5:30-8:30pm at morgan contemporary glass gallery, 5833 Ellsworth Ave in Shadyside. common discourse features the work of Jen Blazina, Ron Desmett, Michael Janis, Susan Longini, Carmen Lozar, Heather Joy Puskarich, Demetra Theofanous and Randy Walker. Pittsburgh based Ron Desmett, well known locally for his statement-making amorphous glass sculptures, and who exhibited in the gallery last fall, has created ever more complex work. Heather Joy Puskarich's Heautoscopic Jaunt, a life-size chocolate casting of her body, is featured in this exhibition. The plaster for its silicone mold was created using her own body, taking more than 13 hours to make. The mold was then filled with white chocolate donated by Sarris Candies of Canonsburg, PA. Philadelphia based Jen Blazina returns to the gallery with a new body of cast work: distinctly ghost-like camera forms. Washington, DC area artist, Michael Janis makes his debut at the gallery. Inspired by ways we transform ourselves, Janis' kilnformed and layered glass pieces have both visual and spatial depth, allowing him to make unusual juxtapositions of imagery. Pittsburgh born and raised Susan Longini, creates elegant pate de verre objects and installations by using glass frits and powders formed by hand with a mold, which are then fired in a kiln to produce one-of-a-kind pieces. Carmen Lozar, back in the gallery after several years, creates poetic and touching narrative and allegorical glass sculptures using flamework, fused and kiln cast glass techniques. Artist Demetra Theofanous is fascinated with environmental art. Technique merges with narratives in her work, to express metaphorical bridges between nature and human beings. For Seattle based Randy Walker, spending time in the forest is a basic necessity. Believing that it’s one place where the beauty of change, both death and birth, is celebrated equally, Walker captures this essence in his work.
